Contrary to popular belief hypoglycemia symptoms are not restricted to people afflicted by diabetes.
Even an apparently healthy person may become a victim of low blood sugar without ever suspecting it. Are one of those people? Check here.
Initial hypoglycemia symptoms
When low blood sugar strikes a CLUSTER of symptoms may follow. Watch out for these three showing up together:
- Anxiety, for no apparent reason
- Hunger, eg. cravings for sweets
- Weakness, mental or physical
But here is a trick. When the above show up separately they may have nothing to do with low blood sugar.

More pronounced hypoglycemia symptoms
When blood sugar continues to on its downward slope other symptoms are likely to show up as well. These may include:
- Heart palpitations
These more pronounced hypoglycemia symptoms do not usually happen in healthy people, but rather in people who are already unwell. These symptoms typically affect people on medication and diabetics that overdose on prescription drugs or diabetics that are on insulin.
If you do not have diabetes
Check all your meds
If you experience symptoms of low blood sugar on a regular basis you will need to visit your doctor and make a few health checks. One of them is to go over your medication. Prescription medication can cause hypoglycemia and your doctor would be able to tell if there is a correlation.
Check your diet
Also your dietary habits need to be examined. Sugars, artificial sweeteners, and alcohol are the biggest suspects. Take a good look at what you drink. You may find an answer right there.
Check your blood
The most severe hypoglycemia symptoms such as sweating, trembling and palpitations are not specific to low blood sugar and may be related to other problems in your body. Nonetheless, if you experience these please prompt your doctor to test for blood sugar related dysfunctions such as hypoglycemia, diabetes and insulin resistance.
Check your health
Testing to rule out blood sugar ups and downs is a good start. But if these tests come back normal your doctor may suggest additional tests and look at the symptoms from a different angle. A naturopathic physician or a functional medical doctor would be able to advise you on more advanced and more detailed tests pertaining to your health.
